EXCEL4HOUSING4.0 is a four-year European Erasmus+ initiative that creates a transnational network of Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) to drive the green and digital transition in the construction and housing sector. The project brings together education providers, research institutions, industry clusters, and public authorities to co-design training, innovation, and partnerships for energy-efficient, digital, and circular housing — empowering a skilled workforce for “Housing 4.0.”
Overview
Europe’s construction sector is entering a new era — one shaped by sustainability, digitalisation, and circular practices. Yet this transformation is only possible with a workforce equipped for the challenges ahead. EXCEL4HOUSING4.0 was created to meet this need. Funded by Erasmus+ and bringing together 24 partners across more than ten countries, the project is building a European network of Centres of Vocational Excellence to prepare professionals for Housing 4.0.
The initiative strengthens teaching and learning by developing innovative cross-border training and capacity-building programmes that transfer smart, green, and circular skills essential for energy-efficient housing. It also deepens collaboration between business and education by co-creating industry-relevant curricula, apprenticeships, and upskilling pathways that reflect real labour market needs. At the governance level, the project establishes sustainable collaboration frameworks and funding models, including a competence centre dedicated to energy-efficiency finance and long-term vocational sustainability.
